Platiras Lake

The artificial Lake Plastira (its official name is Tavropos Reservoir) is located a few kilometers outside the city of Karditsa, at an altitude of 792m, on the plateau of Nevropoli. Its total surface is 24km2 and its maximum volume of water is 400,000,000m3. Its length from North to South is 14km, its width from East to West is 4km and its maximum water depth at the dam is 65m. Its optimum water depth is 25m below Neochori. Lake Plastira rises to its highest water lever at the end of May. The lake also has several small islands, the largest of which is Niaga, which is opposite the village of Moucha. The route along the lake’s perimeter is 60km. The lake was formed in 1959 with the construction of an arch dam, 220m long and 83m high, at Kakavakia, the south end of the Tavropos river also known as Megdovas. The idea for its construction was conceived by Nikolaos Plastiras, and it was renamed and became widely known as Lake Plastira!

Most of the times, when one hears about human intervention in nature, what automatically comes to mind is the invasion of the natural realm, as well as concrete monsters. There are exceptions, however. One such exception is undoubtedly the artificial Lake Plastira or Tavropos Reservoir. This project, not only did it not have a bad impact on the natural environment, but it actually facilitated and enhanced the tourist development of the area as well as the Prefecture of Karditsa in general.

As the landscape at Lake Plastira is full of mountains, waters and trees, it provides an ideal getaway to calm your mind, rejuvenate yourself, and immerse in nature with outdoor activities, such as cycling and hiking, canoeing and kayaking on the lake, horse riding, skiing, etc.
